Life in the West demonstrated quite plainly to Soviet occupation troops the contradiction between the promises of Marxist-Leninist theory and the practices of the Stalinist dictatorship. Some reacted to this with doubts about communism, others with a lack of discipline or the desire to desert. Moscow – correctly – always attributed a political dimension to the various offences, for such incidents discredited the political standing of the Soviet Union abroad. In order to prevent “political-ideological subversion”, various measures were applied, though their success – above all in the period immediately after the war – remained small. The triangle of ideology, control and repression could not deter hundreds of thousands of members of the Soviet military from becoming acquainted with a Western country like Austria with all its temptations and amenities.

Barbara Stelzl-Marx, Mag.
